Open Night Tuesday November 6th 2007
A very large attendance was present for the Annual College
Open Night. Guests and visitors were taken on student-led guided tours
of the College facilities. Christine Bergin spoke on behalf of 1st Years;
Claire Holland addressed a packed quad on behalf of the Student Council.
Betty Radley gave a detailed account of the work of the Parents' Association.
Our Deputy Principal Margot Hartnett and our Principal Tony Lee gave
speeches on all aspects of life in St. Al's. Donal O' Murchú was master
of ceremonies and co-ordinator of the Open Night.

Results
Once again excellent results were achieved at Leaving Cert
and Junior Cert Examinations.
Retirement of Sr. Teresa Daly SMG. Member of
teaching staff of St. Aloysius' College
The entire community of St. Al's were saddened to say farewell to Sr.
T (as she was fondly known) the longest serving member of staff. Sr.
Teresa who retired from teaching on Friday 26th October 2007 will take
up a new position in the training of Sisters to SMG. Congregation in
Kenya. We wish Sr. Teresa the very best and thank her for all her work.

Fundraising
The Students Council and Chaplaincy team orgainised a bag packing fundraiser
for the Childrens Leukaemia Association gathering an amazing total of
€3,540. Well done to all involved.

€1,200 was raised for Marymount Hospice from a Coffee Morning.
The Concern Fast took place again in November 2007 gaining huge funds
for Concern's work all over the world to combat poverty.
The parents association held a Fundraising Table Quiz in the Junction
Bar, Glounthaune on Friday October 19th 2007. A very successful evening
was enjoyed by all who attended.
Stident Civies day raised €1,120. Thanks to the Students Council.
Religious Services
A mass was held during the first term 2007/2008 for
the Senior Cycle Students (4th 5th and 6th Yrs.)
A mass was also held for Junior Cert Cycle Students
(2nd and 3rd Yrs.)
A special mass was held for our 1st Year students on
Thursday October 25th, Fr. Cummins was the celebrant and our Chaplain
Kathleen Cleary organised the masses during the first term.
Thanks to Kathleen Cleary for all her Chaplaincy work.
A very successful Retreat was organised for our Leaving
Cert students.
A Retreat for 1st Yrs is presently being organised for
November 26th
Ms. Cleary was involved in the organising of our Retreats
and November Services of Remembrance for dead.
Sincere Sympathy
Our Sympathy to Margot Hartnett and her family on the
death of ha mother-in-law Mrs Hartnett and the death of her mother Mrs
Hennessy.

Official Opening of New Computer Laboratory
and State of the Art Gymnasium
On Monday November 12th 2007 Micheál Martin,
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment officially opened our
new Gymnasium and Michael Ahem Minister of State for Innovation officially
opened our new Computer Laboratory. They were joined by Deputy David
Stanton T.D. and invited guests.

The Gym was co-funded by G.E. Healthcare and parental
fundraising led by Mr. Tom Mahon's cycle around Munster.

Comhairle Na nÓg
Lorraine Cahill, Jennifer McCarthy, Alicia O'Leary and Ciara O'Connor
(5th Yr Students) all attended the Cork County Comhairle na nÓg
to discuss and debate the issues of Youth Cafés and Road Accidents.
Trips
Our Transition Year Students attended outdoor rursuits in Oystcrhavcn
and Kilfinane.
5th and 6th Yr Art students are to visit the National Art Gallery in
Dublin on November 20th.
3rd Year Students are presently planning a visit to the Dáil
on Decembver 13th.
Sports
Sporting excellence is once again to the fore in St Al's with
Hockey, Basketball, Equestrian. Camogie, Athletics and Football all
being played during the first term.
Music
First Years attended the Cork Pops Orchestra on Friday
November 16th,
The School Choir sang at masses during the first term.
The Orchestra played to our guests on Open Night 2007.
Visitors to the College
Emily Logan, The Ombudsman for Children visited the
college in May 2007 to speak to 5th year students.
Student Council
The Student Council meet everv Tuesdav at Lunchtime.
Jennifer Rea and Andrea Buttimer were elected on October 17th 2007 as
the 1st Yr representatives.
Meitheal Team
The Meitheal Team are working hard to help the 1st Yrs
feel welcome in the college. We thank them for all their work.
Green College
Mrs. Searson is presently working on the introduction
of the Green School Programme in the College.
Fair Trade
5th year students are presently trying to promote Fair Trade products
among the students and staff of the college.
Debating
Well done to Ms. McAuliffe and her Junior debating team,
Susan Rea, Jemma O'Leary, Shauna Keniry, Laura Dowling, Ciara Twohig
and Faye McKeown.
Congratulations to Susan Rea and Jemma Keniry who have
qualified for the next round of City Schools Debating Competition.
